On May 13, 2005, Chairman Jia Qinglin of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held talks with Chairman Alarcon of Cuban National Assembly of People's Power in Havana.
Jia said that over the past 45 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Cuba, despite the fluctuations of the international situation we always firmly believe that to develop the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries is in the fundamental interest of the two peoples and conducive to maintaining world peace, promoting common development and accelerating human progress. With the common cause and belief, the communist party and people of China and Cuba understand, support and accommodate each other and have developed profound friendship. In recent years the leaders of the two countries have maintained frequent exchanges of visit, the bilateral political mutual trust become increasingly deepened and the bilateral cooperation in various fields of economy and trade achieved fruitful results, marking a new era of all-round development of bilateral relations.
Jia said that in November last year President Hu Jintao during his visit to Cuba reached wide common consensuses with President Castro on deepening the bilateral mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation. The purpose of his visit this time is to implement those important consensuses and deepen the China-Cuba relations and the mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation in various fields. Jia pointed out that China sincerely thanks the Cuban government and the National Assembly of People's Power for issuing the timely statement extending firm support for China after the National People's Congress (NPC) of China passed the Anti-Secession Law in March this year.
Alarco said that Cuba and China have similar historical experiences. 45 years ago despite the external interference and pressure Cuba became the first Latin American country that made the decision to recognize the People's Republic of China. Facts show that such a decision is correct. In recent years with the care of the leaders of both countries the bilateral relations are developing constantly. Cuba attaches great importance to developing the cooperative relations with China and sincerely thanks China for its long-term help. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Cuba will take this opportunity to push forward the development of Cuba-China relations and friendly cooperation. The two leaders also introduced the domestic situation to each other and exchanged opinions on related international and regional issues.
Following the meeting, Jia attended the signing ceremony for the exchange of documents on China's supply of security check equipment to Cuba and then accompanied by Alarcon presented a wreath to the monument of Cuban national hero Jose Marti. On the same day Jia also visited the University of Havana, the well-known biggest institute of high learning with the longest history in Cuba.
