On May 15, 2005, Chairman Jia Qinglin of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) met with Raul Castro, First Vice President of the State Council and the Council of Ministers of Cuba in Havana.

Jia said that although China and Cuba are ocean apart the two countries have established profound friendship during the long-term exchanges and treat each other sincerely. In recent years the bilateral political mutual trust keeps strengthening and cooperation areas continue expanding. President Hu Jintao, during his state visit to Cuba in November last year, reached wide consensus with Chairman Fidel Castro on deepening the mutually beneficial and friendly cooperative relations between the two countries, which greatly promoted the all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties. China admires and thanks the Cuban communist party and government for their consistent firm support on issues concerning the fundamental interest of China including the Taiwan issue.

Jia noted that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government attach great importance to developing relations with Cuba and will adhere to the principle of long-term friendship between China and Cuba reiterated by President Hu. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. China will take this opportunity to faithfully implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries in a bid to push for the constant development of the mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation between the two countries.

Jia also introduced the efforts of the CPC and the Chinese government to implement the scientific concept of development, solve the problems of agriculture, rural areas and farmers, improve the social security system and build an energy resource efficient society.

Raul said that Cuba and China are good friends sharing wide common interest and facing identical development tasks. Cuba is very happy to see the development achievements of China. At present the two countries maintain frequent exchanges of high-level visits, close political relations and sound momentum of economic and trade cooperation. In November last year President Hu Jintao and Chairman Fidel reached a series of important consensus on strengthening the friendly cooperation between the two countries and pushing Cuba-China all-round friendship into a new era of development. Cuba always treats its relations with China from a strategic perspective and will further strengthen the friendly cooperation with China in various fields in compliance with the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries. Raul reaffirmed that Cuba would continue to firmly pursue the one-China policy and oppose any separatist activity aiming at "Taiwan independence".

On May 15, Jia visited Varadero, a major tourism city of Cuba.
