On the evening of June 7, 2004, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing talked over phone with US Secretary of State Colin Powell upon request.
On the issue of the new resolution on Iraq, Li said that the adoption of a resolution favorable for the proper addressing of the Iraqi issue is the common aspiration shared by all the members of the UN Security council and relevant parties. Currently, the consensus of various parties is expanding and their positions are getting close. The Chinese side hopes those who proposed the draft will continue to show flexibility and listen to and take into consideration reasonable recommendations from other parties so as to completely resume Iraq's sovereignty and realize its stability and security at the earliest date possible.
Powell thanked the Chinese side for having played a significant role on the Iraqi issue. He indicated the US would continue consultations with other parties on the new resolution.
Talking about the Taiwan issue, Powell reaffirmed that the US would adhere to the one-China policy and the principles enshrined in the three Sino-US joint communiqués.
