On March 24, Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations Wang Guangya made a speech after the voting of the UN Security Council |
On July 23, 2007, Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations Wang Guangya, when answering the question of Chinese journalist on the United Nations Secretariat's rejection and return of Chen Shui-bian's letter, said the decision of the UN Secretariat has maintained the solemnity of the UN Charter and upheld the dignity of the UN and the Chinese government highly appreciates the decision.
The permanent representatives of three countries to the UN, including the Solomon Islands, submitted to the UN Secretariat the letter from Chen Shui-bian to the UN Secretary-General in which the Taiwan authorities applied for "joining the UN in the name of Taiwan" on July 19, which is an absurd and blatant splittist move for "Taiwan independence" and firmly opposed by the Chinese government, said Wang.
He added that only a sovereign state is qualified to apply for UN membership according to the UN Charter as well as relevant provisions of the UN Security Council and General Assembly.
There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. The government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China, which is a position widely held by the international community, totally in line with the UN Charter and recognized by the Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly. Taiwan has no qualification whatsoever to join the United Nations under any name or in any way since statehood is required for membership of the UN, stressed Wang.
He pointed out that the UN Secretariat's decision of immediately rejecting and returning the letter conveyed by related countries including the Solomon Islands according to the Resolution 2758 and the one-China position upheld by the UN helps guarantee the solemnity of the UN Charter and the authority of the organization, adding that the Chinese government highly appreciates the decision. He expressed confidence that the Chinese government and people will continue to gain the understanding and support of the UN and its member states in the cause of maintaining national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
A spokesperson of the UN Secretariat told reporters on July 23 that the Secretariat had decided to reject Chen Shui-bian's letter to the UN Secretary-General submitted by the permanent representatives of related countries according to General Assembly Resolution 2758 and returned the letter on July 20.
