On the afternoon of May 9, 2005, President Hu Jintao met in the hotel where he stayed with President Basescu of Romania in Moscow. The two heads of state noted that they would make joint efforts to expand and deepen the traditional, friendly and cooperative relations between China and Romania.

Hu Jintao said that both countries and peoples enjoy profound traditional friendship. Since establishing the diplomatic relations over 50 years ago, the bilateral relations have been developing smoothly and withstood the trials of time and ever-changing international situation. China and Romania have neither conflict of fundamental interests nor any pendent issues. The further development of bilateral relations accords with the fundamental interests of the people of both countries and is conducive to maintaining world peace and stability. Last year, the two countries agreed to raise China-Romania relations to the comprehensive, friendly and cooperative partnership. We are willing to make joint efforts with the Romanian side to drive the comprehensive, friendly and cooperative partnership to higher levels.

Basescu said that Romania-China friendship is the fruit cultivated by the people of both countries for many years. The political situation of Romania has changed a lot in recent years. But it has been the consensus of ruling and opposition parties of Romania to incessantly strengthen and expand the relations with China. The Romanian government has unswervingly pursued the one-China policy. There are no problems between our two countries in this regard. We will make joint efforts to push forward the traditional and friendly cooperation.

The two heads of state expressed satisfaction over the development of bilateral economic and trade relations and agreed to expand the mutually beneficial cooperation. Hu Jintao said that China-Romania economic and trade cooperation enjoys great potential and a bright future. We should grasp the opportunity of rapid development of both sides to actively support enterprises of both countries to expand investment and strengthen mutually-beneficial cooperation. Basescu indicated that the Chinese commodities are popular in the Romanian market and hoped to expand Romania-China economic and trade cooperation. Romania is actively developing the tourism industry and building transportation facilities. The Chinese enterprises are competitive in these fields. Both sides will enjoy broad cooperation prospects.
