On the afternoon of June 16, 2004, President Hu Jintao met in the State Guest House where he was staying with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Nazarbayev successfully completed his visit to China last month and reached broad consensus with Hu on further enhancing China-Kazakhstan friendly cooperation. Hu felt very pleased to meet with him once again after a month. He said during President Nazarbayev's visit to China last time, we had signed a number of significant documents on bilateral cooperation including the Joint Statement. In particular, the agreement on bilateral cooperation in oil and gas has laid a solid foundation for the two countries to strengthen energy cooperation and will exert important impact on the long-term development of bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Relevant departments in the two countries should make full efforts in implementing the agreement and ensure the timely launch of key projects in a bid to benefit both peoples. China supports the suggestion of Kazakhstan to build a quasi-rail railway connecting China, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran and the two sides may conduct enhanced cooperation in project studies.
Nazarbayev expressed his satisfaction with the fruitful results of his China tour, believing that the accelerated bilateral cooperation in economy and trade, and especially in energy, will witness bright prospects for development. The two sides can continue to explore new ways and channels to expand cooperation. He said Kazakhstan and China share identical or similar views on important international and regional issues, reiterating that his country firmly supports China's internal and external policies and would like to continuously deepen comprehensive friendly cooperation between China and Kazakhstan.
When talking about the upcoming Tashkent Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Hu said after three years of development, SCO has stepped into a new period of development with pragmatic cooperation as the major task. Enhanced cooperation in security and economic fields will be the priorities for future work. Only when pragmatic cooperation in these areas continuously yields substantive results to bring tangible benefits for the peoples of member states, can SCO enjoy strong life force. Nazarbayev agreed with President Hu's point of view. He said Kazakhstan firmly supports SCO and the Tashkent summit will be of great significance to the development of the organization. He added that all the member states should make utmost efforts in cooperation to ensure the success of the summit and earnestly implement the agreements to be signed.
The two heads of state also exchanged views on other issues of common interest such as the situations in Asia and the Middle East.
