The signing ceremony for the Exchange of Letters on the 2026 China-aid School Uniform Material Project was held in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, on September 11. H.E. Ambassador Qi Zhenhong and Secretary to the Ministry of Education Nalaka Kaluwewe signed the documents. Counsellor Tang Yandi, Sri Lankan Deputy Minister of Education Senevirathne, and other officials attended the ceremony.

Deputy Minister Senevirathne remarked, “The longstanding friendship between China and Sri Lanka is built on mutual respect and cooperation. Today’s assistance is a true reflection of this enduring partnership. On behalf of the Ministry of Education, the Government of Sri Lanka, and the millions of students and families who benefit, I extend our sincerest gratitude to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China.”

Secretary Kaluwewe emphasized, “Today’s ceremony is a testament to the deep and lasting friendship between our two countries. China has always stood with Sri Lanka in times of difficulty, providing both material and moral support. This partnership goes beyond mere assistance; it is founded on trust, mutual respect, and a shared vision for the well-being of our peoples.”

H.E. Ambassador Qi Zhenhong stressed that “education should never be compromised, and children should never bear the hardship.” He noted that children’s education is directly linked to the future of a nation and the destiny of its people. “China has continued to provide school uniform materials to Sri Lankan students despite challenges, with the hope that children can pursue their studies and daily life with greater dignity and confidence. As an old and trusted friend of the Sri Lankan people, China will, within its capacity, continue to support Sri Lanka’s socio-economic recovery and long-term development, while further deepening the traditional friendship and cooperation between our two countries.”
