On May 16, Sinopec held the “Sinopec Sri Lanka Public Open Day and Launch Ceremony of the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ Sinopec Action Plan” in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The event was attended and addressed by H.E. Ambassador Qi Zhenhong, and Hon. Kumara Jayakody, Minister of Power and Energy of Sri Lanka. Also present were Hon. Haniff Yusoof, Governor of the Western Province, Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, Senior Additional Secretary to the President, and other Sri Lankan officials.
Minister Jayakody highlighted that Sinopec’s modernization of fuel stations in Sri Lanka aligns closely with the country’s national development goals. He noted that the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative is a key national program designed to promote environmental protection and sustainable development. This event, he stated, reflects China and Chinese enterprises’ unwavering support for Sri Lanka’s development agenda, once again demonstrating that China is Sri Lanka’s most trusted cooperation partner. He expressed hope that the two countries will jointly pursue a cleaner, more sustainable future. The Minister added that Sri Lanka looks forward to closer energy cooperation with China and is keen to explore new areas of collaboration in oil, wind power, battery storage technologies, and beyond, in addition to ensuring the smooth implementation of existing projects.
Ambassador Qi Zhenhong emphasized, as the world’s largest refining company, the second-largest chemical company, and China’s leading supplier of refined oil and petrochemical products, Sinopec has always been deeply rooted in Sri Lanka, committed to serving Sri Lanka, and caring for Sri Lanka. Sinopec’s dedication to sustainability, high-quality service, and corporate social responsibility is a true reflection of the spirit of China-Sri Lanka cooperation.
Ambassador Qi further underscored that the event marked an important step by Sinopec in implementing the key consensus reached between the leaders of China and Sri Lanka. Earlier this year, President Dissanayake became the first foreign head of state to visit China in 2025. During that visit, the two heads of state reached significant consensus on deepening the China–Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership and building a China–Sri Lanka community with a shared future. Relevant departments from both sides are now working intensively to implement these agreements as quickly as possible.
He concluded by reaffirming that China, as a reliable and long-term partner of Sri Lanka, will continue to stand firmly with Sri Lanka, supporting its efforts to achieve high-quality development. He expressed confidence that the construction of the China–Sri Lanka community with a shared future will advance to new heights.
